Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD and attention deficit disorder, or ADD, affect millions of children and adults worldwide. There are many treatments for the symptoms of ADHD and ADD, such as medications like Ritalin, however, these treatments do not support the parent caring for the child with this type of disorder, or even the spouse who is supporting their loved one with one of these disorders. Health & Help Chat is here to offer parents, and those either living with ADHD or ADD, or those who love someone who has it, the support you deserve.
Although there are people who claim that many children are simply diagnosed with ADHD or ADD to put a label on an active child, it has been scientifically proven that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit disorder are very real conditions that need to be treated in order to be controlled; just like any other diagnosed illness. In the United States alone, "4.5 million children 5-17 years of age have ever been diagnosed with ADHD as of 2006,"1 and the numbers are growing each day. For example, "Diagnosed cases of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder increased almost 4 percent every year from 2000 to 2010 making it the number one mental health concern in children."2 Luckily, there are proven therapies, both with and without medication, such as dietary changes, that have become effective in treating this disorder.
Health & Help Chat also understands that children are not the only ones who have ADHD or ADD - it has also become a phenomenon for adults as well. For example, ADHD "...affects an estimated 4.1 percent of adults, ages 18-44, in a given year."3 It seems common sense that there would be an adult population with ADHD or ADD; after all, these children who have been diagnosed do grow up. Luckily for these children however, their condition has been treated for years; unfortunately, there is a whole population of adults who were only diagnosed with ADHD or ADD after their childhood was long behind them. These are very likely the same adults who could not understand why they have trouble holding a job down and/or maintaining relationships. The relief at hearing that they have a legitimate medical condition must be massive. Finally there are answers as to why these adults were considered impulsive, indecisive, easily distracted and unable to focus or sit still. At last this population knows that there is a genuine medical reason for a great deal of the difficulties they have always faced each day.
If you have either struggled with ADHD or ADD as a child and are now an adult, have recently been diagnosed with ADHD or ADD, are raising a child with the disorder, or just love someone with ADHD or ADD, this page on Health & Help Chat is the right place for you. We encourage you to join this community which consists of an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Peer Support Chat Room, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder peer support forums and an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder peer support social network for you to reach out to others in the same situation; we encourage you to meet, greet, share and support with others around the world.
